In 1858 the smell of sewage in the Thames got so bad that Parliament was suspended, and steps to clean up the river were implemented as a result. 150 years later the Department for International Development marked the occasion of the ‘great stink of London’ with this reminder: 1 billion people live without toilets, and 900 million without clean water.
“It is time for us to bring about change globally” said development secretary Douglas Alexander, “and give that same access to the millions currently living without toilets and clean water to wash and drink.”
