It’s been a year since Greenpeace announced their ingenious Heathrow airplot. To block the building of the third runway, the activist group bought a plot of land on the proposed site of the runway, and then invited supporters to join as legal beneficiaries on the title deeds.
There are now over 57,000 signatories, each one entitled to consultation and legal representation should the land be compulsorily purchased. It’s a massive headache for the developers, and in my opinion one of the most creative protests in the country.
One year on, the campaign aims to ramp up the number of supporters to 100,000 by the general election, sending a very clear signal to the incoming government that climate change and expanding aviation are incompatible goals.
“If we’re serious about climate change,” says Greenpeace’s Jamie Woolley, “a third runway makes no sense at all because it will make Heathrow the largest single source of emissions of the UK.”
