Seasonal eating – October

It’s Ocober, which mean it is apple season, and it’s been a bumper harvest this year. Celebrate with Apple Day, which is October 21st. Blackberries and damsons will go nicely with them, and pears will arrive shortly. For vegetables may I direct your attention to  aubergines, cauliflower and courgettes, which are about to leave us. [...]

Seasonal eating – September

So, the summer is drawing to a close, such as it has been – apparently this has been the most gloomy August since records began in 1914. My highly unscientific brain tells me this is why my tomatoes and peppers haven’t ripened, because they haven’t had enough sun to tan them red. Still, both are [...]

Seasonal eating – August

August is a happy month for the seasonal eater. Time to load up on the jolly summer peppers, sweetcorn and peas. Courgettes and aubergines are about, which together spell ratatouille, enjoyed this week in the Williams household. New potatoes, carrots and onions are also being harvested right now, and broccoli, leeks and beans. On the [...]

Seasonal eating – July

We’re into the good stuff in July, with new potatoes and carrots everywhere, joined by courgettes, brocolli, and a chorus of broad, French and Runner beans. Cucumbers, cauliflower, cabbages and lettuces continue, and you may find an aubergine or two. Lots of summer berries to enjoy too, with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, redcurrants and blackcurrants. Basically, [...]

Seasonal eating – June

It’s June, and there will be good things to enjoy by the middle of the month as loads of things ripen with the onset of the warmer weather. One of these is strawberries. That’s to say, the genuine strawberry season starts. UK-grown strawberries will have been on sale for a little while already, giving the [...]

Seasonal eating in May

I moved to Luton last week, and I was pleased to discover a little grocer round the corner. I popped in to pick up some vegetables the other day, and had the strange experience of a shopkeeper apologising for his prices – I was considering the red peppers, and they were noticeably overpriced. “The Spanish [...]

Seasonal eating – April

As a precursor to this month’s seasonal eating missive, there was an interesting piece in the paper the other day about the oversimplification of food miles. For example, apples keep well in storage, which means that local English apples can be harvested in September and October, and enjoyed all year round. However, by the summer [...]

Seasonal eating – March

“You should know that food is the area in which it’s easiest and most pleasurable to go green,” says Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall in ‘Do good lives have to cost the earth?‘. “Buy local food and, almost by definition, you’re buying seasonal produce with a low environmental impact.” It’s not just better for the environment either. [...]

Seasonal eating – February

“As consumers, we would all benefit from a return to eating seasonal, local food. It would cut back on the extravagant amounts of greenhouse gases emitted through air freight. It would help struggling local farmers. But above all, it would reintroduce us to more nutritional, tastier food as well as helping us to reconnect with [...]

Seasonal eating – January

This was a bit of a challenge to me for this year, to eat more seasonal food. I started in December because I was excited about it, and you can read my reasons for it in that post. Hopefully I’ll have a whole year of exploring what’s good for each month, picking a seasonal vegetable [...]
