The One World Flag

How would you design a flag for the whole world? That was the challenge set out by Adbusters recently: “We invite you to create a flag – free from language and well-worn clichés – that embodies the idea of global citizenship. A symbol that triggers pride and cohesion, whether worn on a backpack, displayed on a door, or flown on a flagpole. A symbol for anyone to declare membership in a growing and vital human cooperative.”

Quite a few recurring themes there, of unity, diversity, cooperation and connectivity. The black and the plain off-white one are interesting too, both ‘anti-flags’. I like the more natural ones too, the sunshine in the bottom left, the earthy centre flag, and the simple horizon at the top.

And the winner…

Is this, from Marc Arroyo Ortiga, Germany: “A flag has too much symbolism in itself. It shouldn’t be a flag. But maybe, it should be a flag that doesn’t need to be a flag.”

  1. Hi, I am David Bartholomew, originator of the One World Flag®– an international symbol of diversity, since 1996. There are many individual versions/creations of such an idea in existence, and each strikes a unique chord. I believe the idea here is to continue to hold the vision of an ideal and to work toward it, focusing on solutions where so many get stuck on the fact there are problems and that we are not there yet. You can visit http://www.oneworldflag for the image that came through me, and a good page that details some of the better known ones is http://webspace.ship.edu/cgboer/worldflag.html.
