What we learned this week

  • Machine Gun Preacher is a new movie about a gun-toting missionary in Sudan, and is supposed to be based on a true story. My friend Bryan, who has spend several years in Sudan, wonders if it says more about US foreign policy that the film makers intended.
  • Planet 3.0 looks like an interesting new place for intelligent conversation about sustainability.
  • Admirers of African ingenuity might want to look up Making Do, a free e-book on Kenya’s jua kali, the informal fix-it men that keep the country running with whatever tools and parts are available.
  • There’s a great little charity called Earthworks in my hometown of St Albans that works with adults with learning difficulties, growing food and selling it on the local market. I just heard this week that their building has been burned down in an arson attack. If you can spare a donation to help them rebuild, click on over to their site today.
